What to Wear to Pilates Reformer Class: A Beginner’s Checklist
Wondering what to wear to your first Pilates reformer class at KAR Pilates in Trumbull? Take a deep breath—you do not need a brand-new Pilates wardrobe to get started.
The short answer is simple: fitted layers, grip socks, and nothing loose enough to get friendly with the carriage or springs.
A reformer is constantly moving underneath you, so your clothes should move with you—not become a distraction halfway through your workout.
The good news? Your first-class outfit is probably already hiding in your closet. Most of the nerves first-timers feel have less to do with fitness level and more to do with the mystery of What exactly am I supposed to wear?!
We’ve got you.
Here’s exactly what our instructors recommend wearing to Pilates reformer class, what to leave at home, and a few tips to help you walk into your first class feeling confident and ready to move.
And if you’re brand-new to Pilates, come try our complimentary Intro to Pilates class every Saturday at 12:30 p.m.! You’ll learn more about what to wear, how to use the reformer, and—most importantly—get a taste of what an actual class is like. No Pilates experience required!
What to Wear to Pilates Reformer Class: Why the Rules Are a Little Different
A reformer isn’t exactly a stationary piece of gym equipment.
The carriage slides back and forth on springs while your hands and feet work with the footbar, straps, and other parts of the machine. Since everything is happening just inches from your body, clothing that stays put is your best friend.
Loose fabric, long drawstrings, or bulky zippers can get in the way, distract you during an exercise, and make it harder for your instructor to see your alignment.
Kris Anne Radtke, owner of KAR Pilates, gives newcomers a simple rule of thumb:
“A good rule of thumb is to wear something similar to what you might wear to a yoga class.”
Easy enough, right?
What Happens When Clothing Is Too Loose?
Baggy shorts can bunch underneath a strap. Long drawstrings can dangle around the carriage. Oversized tanks can ride up during footwork and suddenly make you very aware of your midsection.
None of this is exactly the Pilates experience you’re hoping for.
Fitted clothing helps you stay comfortable, focused, and covered while also allowing your instructor to see your form clearly, and proper form is key for optimal results! And when you’re learning something new, the last thing you need is to spend half the class wondering whether your shirt is still where you left it.
One more tip: tie your hair back. A bun or ponytail keeps loose hair out of your face and away from the moving parts of the reformer. Your future self will thank you.
The Complete Pilates Reformer Class Outfit Checklist
Putting together your Pilates outfit does not require a shopping spree.
Unless, of course, you want a shopping spree. We won’t judge 😉
Most workout clothes already in your closet will work perfectly well as long as they’re comfortable, fitted, and allow you to move freely.
Tops That Stay Put
A fitted tank, snug long-sleeve shirt, or supportive sports bra worn on its own can all work well.
Here’s an easy test: raise your arms overhead.
If your top stays comfortably in place, you’re good to go. If it immediately heads north past your ribs, it might be better suited for another workout.
Bottoms: Leggings Over Loose Shorts
Full-length or capri leggings are a Pilates studio favorite because they stay in place during exercises like bridges, footwork, and planks.
Loose athletic shorts can bunch underneath straps or shift during certain exercises, so you may find them more comfortable for the treadmill than the reformer.
And for men who aren’t ready to embrace full-length leggings (we understand!), biker shorts underneath a looser pair of shorts are a great option.
The goal isn’t fashion perfection. It’s simply comfortable clothing that stays where it’s supposed to stay.
Grip Socks: The One Non-Negotiable
One of the most common first-timer questions is:
“Do I wear shoes for Pilates?”
Nope! Leave the sneakers at home.
For reformer Pilates, you’ll want grip socks rather than sneakers or bare feet. The grippy bottoms help keep your feet from sliding on the footbar and carriage platform while you’re exercising.
They’re also a great choice for maintaining good hygiene in a shared studio environment.
Forgot yours? No problem.
KAR Pilates has grip socks available for purchase at the front desk—and, if we may say so ourselves, they come in some seriously cute styles. So a forgotten pair of socks is absolutely not a reason to cancel your first class.
Jewelry and Accessories: What to Leave at Home
Your Pilates class is probably not the time to wear your entire jewelry collection.
Rings, bracelets, and long necklaces can become uncomfortable, scratch the reformer upholstery, or get caught on straps and springs.
Watches and fitness trackers are generally fine as long as they’re secure and aren’t swinging around.
And those fabulous oversized hoop earrings? Save them for brunch. Your ears—and your instructor—will appreciate it.
Choosing Pilates Workout Clothes: Think Fabric + Fit
A 50-minute reformer class can make you sweat more than you might expect, especially during the warmer months. We don’t say Love.Sweat.Pilates. for nothing!
That’s why moisture-wicking fabrics are a great choice. They help pull moisture away from your skin rather than holding onto it like cotton can.
Look for activewear labeled:
- Moisture-wicking
- Quick-dry
- Performance fabric
A little spandex or elastane in the fabric is also helpful because it gives you the stretch you need to move comfortably.
And don’t feel like you need to spend a fortune on Pilates clothes. Plenty of mid-range activewear brands offer options that fit the bill.
But remember: Pilates attire does not have to be expensive to be effective.
If it fits well, lets you move, and makes you feel comfortable, you’re already winning.
Why Your Outfit Matters to Your Instructor, Too
Here’s something beginners don’t always realize: your instructor is watching your alignment throughout class.
At KAR Pilates, our certified instructors pay close attention to things like hip position on the carriage, foot placement on the footbar, shoulder alignment during pulling straps, and the position of your spine.
Bulky clothing can make those details harder to see.
A fitted outfit gives your instructor a clearer view of your movement so they can make specific adjustments when needed. Maybe your knee is hyperextending slightly. Maybe your lower back is rounding. Maybe your foot placement needs a tiny adjustment.
Those little corrections can make a big difference.
At KAR Pilates, we’re a form-first studio because proper form helps you get the most out of your workout.
And don’t worry—you don’t need to show up already knowing perfect Pilates form. That’s what your instructor is there for!

What to Bring to Pilates Class
Your Pilates class packing list is refreshingly short.
Bring:
- A full water bottle. Take sips as needed throughout class since there may not be a dedicated water break.
- Yourself! Seriously, that’s the important part.
- A phone only if necessary. Keep it on silent and put it away for the duration of class so you can fully focus on your workout.
What to Leave at Home
A few things are better left outside the studio.
Strong perfume and heavily scented lotion are worth skipping. Pilates studios are shared spaces, and what smells lovely to one person may be a little overwhelming to another—especially during a workout.
Think fresh, comfortable, and considerate.
Dressing for a Trumbull, CT Pilates Studio: Season by Season
Connecticut weather likes to keep us guessing, so your Pilates wardrobe may need to do a little seasonal shape-shifting.
Winter
Fairfield County winters can be chilly, so many members arrive wearing layers and shed them once they get inside.
A lightweight zip-up or pullover over your fitted workout top works perfectly for getting from the car to the studio. Once class starts, you can peel off that extra layer and get moving.
Summer
Summer in Connecticut brings a different challenge: humidity.
A moisture-wicking top can make a big difference when temperatures rise. If you’re driving to class from nearby towns like Monroe, Stratford, Fairfield, or Newtown, you may also want to keep a fresh shirt in the car for the ride home.
Because nobody has ever complained about having a clean shirt after a sweaty workout.
Spring + Fall
Spring and fall are the Goldilocks seasons—sometimes chilly, sometimes warm, sometimes somehow both in the same afternoon.
A lightweight long-sleeve layer over your usual Pilates outfit is usually all you need to handle those in-between days.
The Bottom Line: Keep It Comfortable and Keep It Simple
Figuring out what to wear to Pilates reformer class doesn’t need to be another source of first-class nerves.
Think:
Fitted top + comfortable leggings or fitted shorts + grip socks + hair tied back = you’re ready to Pilates!
You don’t need the trendiest outfit, the fanciest leggings, or a closet full of matching sets. You simply need clothes that let you move comfortably and allow your instructor to see your form.
And if you’re still wondering whether you have the “right” outfit, come as you are. We’ll help you figure it out.
